Red Badis | Dario dario, also known as Scarlet Badis, is a small, colourful fish native to the West Bengal and Assam regions of India and Bhutan. Males display vivid red heads and backs, seven red vertical stripes with bluish-silvery bands, and red fins edged in bluish white. Females are smaller and more subdued, with silvery-pink bodies and faint stripes.
This shy, reclusive fish suits a densely planted aquarium with hiding places, subdued lighting and fine gravel or river sand. Keep it as a pair or in a small group, with multiple females for each male where possible. Males can be territorial, so allow each male an area of around 30 × 30 cm. Red Badis are predatory and accept frozen foods and, occasionally, dry foods. Small peaceful tankmates such as rasboras may be suitable.

Red Badis, also known as Scarlet Badis, is a small freshwater fish native to the West Bengal and Assam regions of India and Bhutan. Males are especially vivid, with red heads and backs, seven vertical red stripes along their sides, bluish-silvery bands and red fins edged in bluish white. Females are smaller and more muted, with silvery-pink bodies and faint or barely visible stripes.
Shy and reclusive, Red Badis do best in a densely planted aquarium with plenty of hiding places and subdued lighting. Keep them as a pair or in a small group, ideally with multiple females for each male. Males may become aggressive towards one another, particularly in smaller aquariums, so allow around 30 × 30 cm of territory per male. They are predatory feeders that accept frozen food and, occasionally, dry food.
