NT Labs Ammonia Test for Critical Water Quality Monitoring
The NT Lab Ammonia Test is an indispensable tool for any aquarium owner. Ammonia is the primary waste product produced by fish and can also be generated by decaying plant leaves or uneaten food. Because it is completely invisible and cannot be detected by sight, relying on a professional test kit is the only way to ensure your tank is safe. Ammonia is extremely toxic to aquatic life, and the only acceptable level for a healthy aquarium is zero mg/l (ppm).
By using this test kit, you can determine if your beneficial bacteria in the filter are effectively breaking down toxins into nitrite. Early detection allows you to take corrective actions, such as adding filter boosters or performing targeted water changes, to save your fish from ammonia poisoning.

- Wait for 10 minutes for the reaction to complete.
- Compare the resulting color of the water to the provided color scale.
Care & Maintenance Tips
- Storage: Keep reagent bottles tightly sealed when not in use.
- Reagent Color: Note that Ammonia 2 reagent may turn blue over time; this is normal and does not affect the accuracy of the results as long as the product is within its expiry date.
- Corrective Action: If levels reach 0.2 mg/l (ppm), consider using a filter starter. For levels between 0.5 – 1.0 mg/l (ppm), perform a 25% water change. For levels above 1.0 mg/l (ppm), perform a 50% water change.
- Holistic Testing: Whenever ammonia is detected, it is strongly recommended to check other vital parameters including pH, KH, and nitrite.
- Cleaning: Always rinse the test tube thoroughly between different samples to avoid cross-contamination.
