ADA Amazonia Pro: New Nutrient-Rich Aquasoil for Planted Aquariums

ADA Amazonia Pro: New Nutrient-Rich Aquasoil for Planted Aquariums

Introducing ADA Aqua Soil Amazonia Pro: A New Substrate for Planted Aquariums

A planted aquarium begins with the substrate beneath the plants. ADA’s new AQUA SOIL – AMAZONIA PRO is a 9L natural-soil substrate designed with aquatic plant growth as its priority. Enriched with nitrogen and phosphate, it is formulated to support strong early growth after planting and help establish slightly acidic water conditions.

Amazonia Pro builds on the characteristics of ADA Amazonia while placing greater emphasis on early plant growth and nutrient availability than Amazonia Ver.2. For aquascapers planning a new Nature Aquarium or a densely planted layout, this new substrate offers another option to consider when designing the tank from the ground up.

What Is New About Amazonia Pro?

ADA describes Amazonia Pro as being made from natural black soil and enriched with nitrogen and phosphate. The formulation is intended to provide nutrients that support plant establishment after planting, while helping create a stable, slightly acidic aquarium environment.

  • Natural black soil: Forms the base of this active aquarium substrate.

  • Nitrogen and phosphate enrichment: Adds nutrients to support aquatic plant growth.

  • Focus on early growth: Designed to help plants establish after planting.

  • Slightly acidic water conditions: The natural soil is intended to help create conditions suited to many aquatic plants and tropical fish.

  • 9L size: The initial product listing is for a 9L bag.

These are product-design goals described by ADA. Results in an individual aquarium will also depend on the source water, planting plan, lighting, filtration, livestock and maintenance routine.

Amazonia Pro Compared with Amazonia Ver.2

Amazonia Pro and Amazonia Ver.2 are both part of ADA’s Aqua Soil range, but ADA describes them with different emphases. Pro is designed to give greater priority to early growth and nutrient availability. Ver.2 is an established option in the range, with its own product format and setup guidance.

Why Aquasoil Has Strong Roots in Japan

Japan’s connection to aquasoil reflects a combination of local soils, horticulture, agriculture and planted aquarium development. Volcanic-origin soils such as Kuroboku are an important part of Japan’s soil landscape. The research behind this article estimates that Kuroboku soils cover about 31% of Japan’s land area, while Andosols as a group occur on less than 1% of land surfaces worldwide.

Japan also had a long history of granular growing media for horticulture. Materials such as Akadama were used in bonsai cultivation because growers needed a medium that could retain water while allowing air to reach plant roots. Agriculture developed soil-processing methods such as drying, grading and granulation. Those practices formed part of a wider technical background for producing soil-based growing media.

These connections help explain the environment in which aquarium aquasoil developed. They do not mean that all aquarium soils are made from the same material, or that Akadama and aquasoil are interchangeable. ADA describes Amazonia as using plant-derived black earth, distinguishing it from many substrates made with volcanic-origin soils.

How Active Soil Substrate Works

Unlike inert gravel, an active soil substrate can contribute nutrients and influence the root zone. Its granules make the material easier to place and plant in than loose fine soil, while providing a medium through which plant roots can develop.

Granules are not necessarily as hard or permanent as ceramic media. Their structure may change over time, depending on the product and aquarium conditions. A change in granule size does not by itself determine whether a substrate needs replacing; consider the overall condition of the tank and follow the manufacturer’s guidance.

Planning a New Tank with Amazonia Pro

A nutrient-enriched substrate is one part of a complete aquarium setup. Before adding livestock, plan the layout, equipment and startup routine so the aquarium can establish gradually.

  1. Plan the aquascape first. Decide where the substrate, rocks, driftwood and plants will sit before filling the aquarium.

  2. Prepare the tank according to the product instructions. Follow ADA’s directions for placing and shaping the substrate.

  3. Plant with care. Use suitable aquascaping tools to position plants without unnecessarily disturbing the substrate.

  4. Fill the aquarium gently. Pour water slowly and carefully to reduce substrate disturbance and clouding.

  5. Run the aquarium through startup. Follow the product guidance for initial care, filtration and water changes, and monitor water conditions.

  6. Add livestock only when conditions are suitable. Allow the aquarium to stabilise and confirm water quality before introducing fish or shrimp.

Use the supplied manufacturer instructions for the exact setup and maintenance steps. Since Amazonia Pro is enriched with nutrients, it is especially important to manage the startup period carefully and avoid rushing to add livestock.

Who Should Consider Amazonia Pro?

Amazonia Pro may suit aquascapers planning a planted aquarium who want a natural-soil substrate with an emphasis on early plant growth and nutrient availability. It can be considered for new planted layouts where the substrate is part of a broader plan for plant selection, lighting, filtration and maintenance.

If you are comparing substrates, review the amount of planting, the needs of your plants, the setup routine you are prepared to follow and the water conditions required by your livestock. A substrate is not a substitute for balancing the other parts of the aquarium system.

Frequently Asked Questions About Amazonia Pro

What is ADA Aqua Soil Amazonia Pro?

Amazonia Pro is ADA’s natural black-soil aquarium substrate formulated to support aquatic plant growth. ADA describes it as enriched with nitrogen and phosphate and designed to support strong establishment after planting.

What size is Amazonia Pro?

The product currently listed by ADA and Aqua Club is a 9L bag.

How is Amazonia Pro different from Amazonia Ver.2?

ADA says Amazonia Pro places greater emphasis on early plant growth and nutrient availability. Compare the product descriptions and setup instructions for both substrates before choosing one for your aquarium.

Does Amazonia Pro affect aquarium water?

ADA says its natural soil helps create slightly acidic water conditions. The effect in your aquarium will depend on the substrate, source water and overall setup, so monitor water conditions during startup.

When can I add fish or shrimp?

Wait until the aquarium has been set up and water conditions are suitable for the livestock you intend to keep. Follow the substrate’s instructions and monitor water quality before introducing animals.
