Keeping your aquarium clean is vital when it comes to a successful tank! We love our aquatic pets, and we’d like to keep their comfort and health levels at a maximum. Deciding on an aquarium filter, you need to take many factors into consideration:

What are different types of filtration?

 1. Mechanical

  • Mechanical filtration is often the first kind that comes to mind. Mechanical filtration uses some kind of material to physically remove particles from the water.

  • Most commonly filters for the home aquarium use some kind of sponge or fibrous material.

  • Larger public aquaria may use sand filters. If you need to remove very small particles, a fabric coated with diatomaceous earth is often used.

2. Biological

  • Probably the most important kind of filtration for an aquarium is biological filtration.

  • Biological filtration is typically performed by bacteria and other microbes, although living plants also perform biological filtration.

  • Biological filtration breaks very toxic nitrogenous waste into less and less toxic forms or, in the case of live plants, locks it into plant tissue.

  • The amount of biological filtration that can be done is based on the biomass of microbes and plants.

  • It is also dependent on the waste levels, as the microbe populations fluctuate with the amount of waste produced.

  • There is always a lag when waste levels increase and the microbe’s population expands to consume the waste.

  • For this reason, new aquaria should be lightly stocked, with the biomass slowly increased over time.

  • The process can be sped up by seeding a new filter or aquarium with bacteria from an established aquarium

2. Chemical

  • This uses chemical media to bind to or react with waste products, either removing them or transforming them.

  • This is the most difficult type of filtration to manage as it is often difficult to detect when the chemical media is spent and needs to be replaced.

Three most commonly used filters:

  1. Sponge filter - Very common and can last years! Using an air pump and a sponge filter it creates a vacuum and sucks up debris and waste into the sponges on the filter. These need to be cleaned every couple of months but can help grow helpful bacteria!

  2. Hang on back - A Hang on the back or HOB is a filter that sits on the side of your aquarium and sucks up water with a pump this water is then filtered through charcoal as well as filter pads and removes waste! Beneficial bacteria also grows, this is usually easier to clean just by replacing the pads. It might be louder and tends to splash water depending on your water line.

  3. Canister - A canister filter is usually used on bigger tanks 55 gallons up and sucks water into a pressurized canister where it is pushed through filter pads, carbon, and bio balls. The water is then sent back into the aquarium. These tend to cost the most but here is a cheaper version I've been using for years.

Things to Consider Before Buying an Aquarium Filter

  • Freshwater or marine aquarium?

  • What type of fish are you going to keep?

(Aquarium filters are critical components of both freshwater and marine aquaria, aquarium filters remove physical and soluble chemical waste products from aquaria, simplifying maintenance. Furthermore, aquarium filters are necessary to support life as aquaria are relatively small, closed volumes of water compared to the natural environment of most fish. Some species like cichlids large ones excrete a huge amount of waste, so you need powerful filtration to keep the water habitable.)

  • How large is your aquarium?

  • How much time can you spare for your aquarium?

  • Will your aquarium have aquatic plants?

Generally, you will need at least 2 different types of filters, and the larger your aquarium, the less maintenance, you could create an almost independent ecosystem which will be sufficient for long periods of time, needing cleaning probably 2 to 3 times a year.

Some of the tested SunSun models for filtration-

Recommendations considering aspects like Flow rate, Cost, Warranty, Availability of spares, Durability, Aesthetics, SunSun has made great filters that compete with better-known brands like Fluval, Eheim, and Marineland, but at a much cheaper price point. ... Overall, these SunSun aquarium filters are an excellent choice, especially if you are on a budget.

 1- SunSun External Canister Filters-

External filters are larger and more powerful than most internal filters and

can hold a lot more media, offering better cleaning and supporting more fish.

The superior power of external filters makes them suitable for large aquaria;

heavily stocked aquaria like African cichlid tanks; and large fish
